Below is a link to a web page with guidance on cleaning EMS transport vehicles during an influenza pandemic. It can also serve as a great reminder as to what we should be doing to keep or vehicles clean during regular transports also to help keep the risk of cross contamination and infections down.
Interim Guidance for Cleaning Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Transport Vehicles during an Influenza Pandemic
http://www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/healthcare/cleaning_ems.htmlIn this document it recommends that services practice basic infection control procedures including vehicle/equipment decontamination, hand hygiene, cough and respiratory hygiene and proper use of FDA regulated PPE.
Although the relative importance of virus transfer from inanimate objects to humans in spreading influenza is not known, hand transfer of the virus to the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth resulting in infection is likely to occur. Hand hygiene, cough etiquette and respiratory hygiene are the principal means of interrupting this type of transmission. Routine cleaning and disinfection practices may play a role in minimizing the spread of influenza.
Also included in the document are routine cleaning method reminders and recommendations for cleaning the entire vehicle, and links to a list of EPA registered disinfectants.
